MPLAB IDE v8.80 vs MPLAB X IDE

I studied a bit on the sources of DMBasic 2.7 and did a download of MPLAB IDE v8.80 and C32 v1.10 as advised in the document "Hacking Duinomite Basic". Now I'm so far that I wanted to do some experiments and I downloaded the newest sources of Github. Now I see that there is no projectfile anymore (folder is with project info), but I have to open it with MPLAB X IDE v1.10. Does this mean that I cannot open the new sources with MPLAB IDE v8.80 anymore?

when the Hacking Duinomite post was written MPLABX was not available, now the latest projects are made with MPLABX
