cannot write debian image on a 4GB sd card!

am I the only one having this issue?
if I try to write the ultimate debian image on a 4GB sd card (it's class 2, the only lying around here ) using dd it tells me "no space left on device", and if I try to see the list of partition (with gparted or cfdisk, for example) there's an error.

Is there a way to make it fit?
