raising the shield sample rate

Hi i want to change the shield firmware code so i can increase the sample rate to 1kHz. it's currently generating packets at 256Hz. i'm using the shield on top of the olimex328 unit and i'm wondering how fast the AtoD is on the 328. can i up the sample rate and expect the AtoD to do the conversion that fast?

Atmel have a data sheet for their atmega328 chip and it should have the data.
