I'm not sure if there is an easy way, maybe except the command setterm -blank, which tell blanking status of virtual consoles, as the man page says "Without an argument, gets the blank status (returns which vt was blanked or zero for unblanked vt)." But if you just need to be sure that the VT is not in blank state (e.g. the screen is on), you can forcefully unblank the framebuffer by writing 0 into the file /sys/class/graphics/fb0/blank.
