A20 pops / clicks with Aplay

Hello everyone
I have an application where I need to use aplay with an A20 SOM.

Everything is working except I get a nasty pop out of the audio output whenever I start or stop playback using aplay.

I get the same pop when I mute/unmute playback in alsamixer.

Anyone got any ideas how to resolve this?
