ESP32-POE does it work with .net nanoFramework?

I have a few Olimex ESP32-POE's that i would like to use with the .net nanoframework as described here; https://whuysentruit.medium.com/running-net-on-esp32-e9e953e591a6

As i understand it, this requires to flash the firmware though, would it still be possible to use the ethernet port for communication somehow or does this require specific firmware?
